Founded in 1994 as Porchlight Theatre Ensemble, its beginnings included ambitious productions of Chekhov's Three Sisters and original musicals by Robert Hartmann and Scott Keys. In 1996, Porchlight refined its mission to focus exclusively on music theatre. Over the last decade, Porchlight has gone from performing at a mix of venues to a three-year tenure at the Athenaeum to its present home at Stage 773. These intimate spaces have allowed Porchlight to give audiences an up-close experience with the grandeur, excitement, and emotion of the musical genre. Porchlight Music Theatre has staged over 52 productions including three world premieres and nine Chicago premieres and has received 22 Jeff Awards (Equity and non-union), 73 Jeff Award nominations (Equity and non-union), 28 After Dark Awards, 1 Black Theatre Alliance Award, and 3 Black Theater Alliance Award nominations.
